GLOSSARY

Afrikaans: language developed from 17th century Dutch that is one of the official languages of the Republic of South Africa

 

Oshiwambo: a Bantu language

 

Ovambo: a member of a Bantu people of northern Namibia

 

Nama: a people of Great Namaqualand in South West Africa

 

Zwickau: city in Eastern Germany, south of Leipzig

 

Rhineland: the part of Germany west of the Rhine River

 

Munchen: city on the Isar River in Southern Germany

Zanzibar Treaty: (1890) an arrangement between Great Britain and Germany to define their respective spheres of influence in eastern Africa. The treaty also gave Germany the island of Helgoland. 

​

​Paris Peace Conference/Treaty of Versailles: (1919) the peace conference led by the Allied Powers after the end of World War I/Treaty detailing the items of peace post-war, mainly a tool used to punish Germany for their part in WWI

​

Ubuntu: The capacity in African culture to express compassion, reciprocity, dignity, harmony and humanity in the interests of building and maintaining community with justice and mutual caring. The idea of ubuntu is especially important in sharing oral history and culture. In order to be of one mind and feel camaraderie, we must realize that we are who we are because of those who came before.
